Get ready for the hottest trend this season which is tie-dye.
This colourful swirl pattern is reasonably associated with a psychedelic hippie subculture of the 60s. Back then, rainbows vibrant colours were worn in order to embrace the free hippie lifestyles. However, believe it or not, tie-dye was not invented by hippies. This technique of dying textiles comes from various cultures across Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Today’s hottest trend was first developed around the sixth century. After a long time, in the 1960s, free-spirit long hair musicians took it up and created their own key trend. After thirty years without it, tie-dye came back to fashion in the early 90s, but in more grunge version. There was also a fashion breakthrough when Rachel, from Friends, wore tie-dye in one of the episodes and her fans followed. It became an everyday, casual norm for skaters, surfers, and others.
Later on, this trend went blank for several years. Nevertheless, you may still remember it or even have some old colorful tie-dye t-shirts. It is time to bring them out and give them another chance. Last season, Prada, Proenza Schouler, Stella McCartney, and Dior showed different pieces in defined as abstract colourful patterns.
“It was a huge trend that we saw both on and off the runway and we embraced it from a wide variety of brands,” said Net-a-Porter global buying director Elizabeth von der Goltz in the interview for Harper’s Bazaar.
Simply taking back the tie-dye t-shirt trend would be obvious and easy. That is why some world known fashion designers have updated it and brought fresh and innovative ideas for using tie-dye differently than ever before. For instance, Prada showed us the tie-dye pattern on A-line skirts and sophisticated, feminine, mini dresses. Proenza Schouler applied tie dye on denim, while R13 crazily dyed an oversized blazer.
Luxury brands are taking inspirations from streetwear and subcultures more and more often. This season, fashion designers chose tie-dye for us. Celebrities such as Beyonce, Gigi Hadid, Kaia Gerber, Chiara Ferragni are already wearing pieces in bold colours and artsy tie-dye pattern. This spring is time for us to paint the town red and feel like a hippie of today.
Did you know that you can become your own fashion designer? You don’t have to have any special designing or dyeing skills. You will need:
- A plain t-shirt
- Tie-dye kit
- Water
- Rubber bands
- Plastic wrap
The process of creating your own tie-dye pattern in any colours you want is easy and anyone can do it at home. Although, you have to be patient as it will take about 6 to 8 hours for the t-shirts to absorb the colourful dyes. Take a look at this 5 minutes video and create your own tie-dye clothes at home.
