Quantity vs Quality, Is it better to have more or invest in a quality piece?

Money, money, money… No doubt a very important part of our lives. We earn money and we spend money. We buy things and we throw them away. And if you are the kind of consumer that put the price above everything else, you probably buy your clothes in the cheap fast fashion stores. But for how long do you own these things? Do they last long and keep the same shape and colour for more than six months?  Are you sure it is worth it?

Quality vs Quantity, Is it better to have more or invest in a quality piece?

This is not an easy question to answer straight away. You must have heard that “it is better to invest and pay more for a garment because it will last forever.” It is true and not true at the same time. Firstly because it simply depends on the brand and the way this particular piece of clothing is being produced. On the other hand, if a product is very cheap you will know straight away that it is not the best quality as the good fabrics are very expensive. There are loads of other points such as paying fairly the garment makers etc., but we will not be focusing on it in this article.

James Dion, retail consultant, and author says that “If clothes last longer, ultimately consumers will learn the age-old lesson about the difference between cost and price: price is what you pay today, cost is what you spend over time.” Just think of any piece of clothing you bought in a fast fashion brand and now answer the question: Does it still look the same after washing it for the 20th time? Probably not. Many of those items shrink, lose their shapes or fade, while the dress that you spent £200 for may last you for longer.

I feel like we have been trained to buy more and more to be always in fashion. Sales are appealing, social media push us to get something new and then throw it away. Now, the time of change is slowly coming. More and more people are careful with what fabrics are they buying and where from. It is because of the environmental issues that are now so much talked about. Any reason is good. However, investing in a quality piece will definitely be better for your wallet in the long run. By buying quality clothes and accessories from a trusted source you will save money because you won’t need to buy anything more for some time. If you buy clothes in a cheap fast-fashion store you will be buying constantly and, at the same time, spending more money than you think.

“When people reconnect with the feel of good materials and the way something fits and is sewn really well, it adds to the experience of wearing the garment,” says journalist Elizabeth Cline, author of “Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion.” “It makes you want to wear it over and over again, and that’s different than your relationship with a fast fashion garment that doesn’t feel good and loses shape,” she adds.
