HRH The Duchess of Sussex has guest edited a landmark issue of British Vogue with editor-in-chief Edward Enninful. The most important issue has been entitled ‘Forces of Change’ and highlights the most powerful and impactful women. There are activists, artists, campaigners, prime ministers, and a lot more amongst the female changemakers who this issue is dedicated to.

When I received the September issue, the first thing that I noticed was the cover that was photographed by Peter Lindbergh. It is completely different than the other front pages. Primarily because it includes multiple small pictures rather than one and simple. It features 15 women from variable industries, who had a strong impact on the current life. These are not randomly selected ladies. The selection was a highly personal process for the Duchess and for Enninful, and the result of a collaboration that began in January of this year. Moreover, this cover stands out, because one of the squares does not have a picture. It has a little mirror instead. What is that supposed to mean? I guess any of us can impact the world and make some positive changes.

Who is on the cover pictures and why?

  1. Jacinda Ardern – New Zealand Prime Minister
  2. Greta Thunberg – Teenaged climate activist
  3. Jane Fonda  – The activist and actor
  4. Laverne Cox- The LGBTQIA+ advocate, actor, and producer
  5. Adwoa Aboah – The mental health campaigner and model
  6. Adut Akech – The former refugee and model
  7. Ramla Ali – The former refugee and boxer
  8. Sinéad Burke – The diversity advocate and lecturer
  9. Gemma Chan – The campaigner and actor
  10. Salma Hayek Pinault – The women’s rights advocate, actor, and producer
  11. Francesca Hayward – The Royal Ballet principal dancer and actress
  12. Jameela Jamil – The body positivity activist and actor
  13. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie – The author
  14. 14.Yara Shahidi – The youth voting activist and actor
  15. Christy Turlington Burns – The maternal health advocate and model
  16. You – What impact do you have? Are you ready to change the world?

These are just a few examples of ladies who run the modern world. Obviously, it wouldn’t be possible to fit all of them on the cover, not even in one book. This year the September issue encourages us to be strong, powerful and active. It is a special issue. Also, because a member of the Royal Family is a guest editor.

The Duchess of Sussex not only collaborated with the British Vogue’s editor-in-chief but also had her meaningful insight in the September issue. She used her own words to write the guest editor’s letter. She introduced the reader with the topic and explained what does the phrase ‘Forces of Change’ mean. Meghan Markle’s contribution can also be found when reading the interview with the former First Lady Michelle Obama.
