You may already be on top of the ’90s revival shoulder purse thanks to our recent shopping guide or perhaps you sported a hands-free bum bag last summer, but have you thought about upgrading to an elegant belt bag, or gravitating towards an XXL tote? Or even considered keeping hold of that slick black leather handbag that serves just as well now as it will as your high-summer hit? The SS19 runways offered up a conveyor belt of options but the styles that caught the Vogue editor’s eye make for a very focused shopping list. Here are the six need-to-know bag trends to keep you one step ahead this summer.
Givenchy
If you’re toying with a bum bag purchase, park it, there’s an upgrade in town and it’s more refined than ever. The extra elegant belt bag will come into its own next spring thanks to Riccardo Tisci’s chain link style for Burberry. Check Givenchy’s pristine white leather version too, while at Chloé, they appeared hand-held rather than belted at the show in September. Last, but by no means least, who doesn’t want a Chanel version in their wardrobe?
Chloé
Recommending a potentially quite cold and corporate black leather handbag purchase as one of your key summer styles may sound a little rogue, but it’ll be the most elegant punctuation to that bells and whistles must-have crotchet dress you’ll be wanting to slip into come May. And really these are no ordinary everyday handbags, gold logo clasped is the way to go – Celine’s Triomphe in shiny calfskin, Chloé’s C Double Carry, and Valentino’s VRING with an added red tag flag are hitting the Vogue editors’ wish lists.
Fendi
The desire for original “It” bag styles has gained such momentum that designers have actioned the re-issuing and design updates of flashback classics such as the Fendi Baguette and the Dior Saddle. Note the SS19 riff on the rectangle ‘90s and noughties party-purse shape, Prada’s Sidonie leather comes in suede, leather and the print of the season – tie-dye, whereas Michael Kors’ versions take shape in chain handle brocade. But the big question is, will they house your new iPhone just as well as they did the Nokia 3210?
Loewe
The summer 2018 prize of Most Instagrammable Beach Accessory went to the extraordinarily large straw hat by Jacquemus (how did they get that through on hand-luggage I hear you ask?) and for SS19 he’s going for it again with his oversized raffia fringed totes – so big they skim the ankle. But it isn’t only his love of straw and raffia that cements the mood – see Macramé at Isabel Marant and Sonia Rykiel, while Loewe’s low-slung bags add the same carefree attitude we hope to carry all summer long.
Burberry
It’s big, really big, almost parachute big; which when full, thrown over your shoulder is akin to a work out. Proenza Schouler’s canvas number could most certainly fit in more than one kitchen sink, Versace’s transparent version is ideal for the beach, and Burberry’s will induce ultimate office envy. Start arm training in preparation now.
